To better understand these spending habits, we surveyed over 2,000 Americans, comparing their budget expectations with the real costs. The results may surprise you!
What Are People Willing (and Not Willing) to Splurge On?
Subscriptions to platforms like Netflix and Spotify are incredibly popular. Most people think they’re only spending a small amount each month, but is that really the case? On average, people are willing to spend $38 per month on these subscriptions. However, the reality is that they spend around $86 monthly—more than double their intended budget!
This trend of overspending isn’t limited to entertainment. It extends to major expenses like housing. The average person would like to spend $1,560 on their monthly mortgage, but the actual average payment is closer to $1,775—a difference of $2,580 per year.
Interestingly, while people tend to overspend on subscriptions, they are willing to spend more than necessary on movie tickets. For example, Gen Z is willing to spend up to $31.50 for two tickets, which is nearly $8 more than the actual cost.
When it comes to vacations, the spending habits of different generations vary. While Millennials and Gen Xers are willing to spend over $2,000 on a five-day domestic vacation, Gen Z is more conservative, budgeting around $1,758, which is $242 less than the actual cost.
With major events like the 2024 Paris Olympics, many Americans underestimate the costs. While they believe attending the Olympics would cost around $3,700, the actual price tag is over $6,400—42% higher than expected.
However, expectations for domestic sporting events are more accurate. Americans are willing to spend $114 on a ticket, which aligns well with the cost of attending an MLB, NBA, or NHL game. NFL games, being pricier, average around $151 per ticket, reflecting the popularity of football in the U.S.
Local Spending Priorities
Now that we’ve seen how Americans’ budgeting habits compare to actual prices, let’s take a closer look at spending expectations across different states.
In Arizona and Washington, residents are quite accurate with their estimates for sports tickets, coming within just $1 of the actual cost. However, Washington residents are willing to spend much more on concert tickets, with an average budget of $338.73—$215 more than the actual price.
Idaho residents tend to overestimate the cost of a 20-minute Uber ride, while New Jersey residents underestimate their travel expenses. For instance, they budget $300 less than the actual cost for a five-day domestic vacation and fall short by $470 for international airfare.
On the other hand, New Hampshire residents have a good grasp of the costs associated with attending the Olympics, with one in four accurately estimating or even overestimating the price.
Despite these regional differences, there are some spending habits that Americans across the country share. For example, people generally agree that they are willing to spend more than the average price on:
- A nice dinner for two
- A concert ticket
Conversely, there are some expenses that many Americans find too costly, such as:

To explore how Americans budget their leisure activities, we surveyed over 2,200 participants. The data in this study was collected and analyzed in July 2024. Due to insufficient sample sizes, Alaska, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Vermont, Washington, D.C., and Wyoming were excluded from the research.
